Units matter - a visit with cousin gertrude

  • Game Designer: Jean McGrogan
  • Content Area: Math
  • Recommended Ages: Middle School, High School
  • Ideal Group Size: Small Group
  • Suggested Time: 45 minutes

Cousin Gertrude has invited you to come for a visit. This will be fun. You’ll get to see her pet goat, Gernie, and play wordand math games with her friends. You’ll have gifts for her, too. Now, you just need to get that passport out of the box!

A Visit to Cousin Gertrude is a Units Matter BreakOut activity that asks students to think outside the box and see the importance of units in their lives. Its premise, a visit to Cousin Gertrude, gives reason to find area, surface area, and volume. Unusual units introduced with clues provided are fortnights and scores. Students will also see the relevance of units in doing addition.

3-DIGIT LOCK = 2-2-9

4-DIGIT LOCK = 2-3-5-5-

ABC MULTILOCK = M-I-C-H, B-A-S-E, F-E-E-T

DIRECTIONAL MULTILOCK = DOWN, LEFT, DOWN, UP, RIGHT

1. Place the passport in the BreakOut box. Use  the directional lock, two 5-letter word locks, and  key lock in the multi-holed hasp to secure the BreakOut box.

2. A small box containing the UV flashlight will be locked using the 4-letter word lock.

3. In the small, 3-number combination box, place the key to the key lock.

4. Place the paper copies of the activities around the room.

The questions that guide students to find where Gertrude lives plus the world map can be placed together on a white board to allow students to see the progression of others’ work.

The gift wrap activity also works well on the whiteboard.

The Gertie the Goat activity can be placed on a table with scratch paper for students to use for their drawings and calculations.

The Hidden Word Puzzle also goes on a table for students to work on.

The Directional Lock Puzzle Form (aka the Directional Alphabet) can be placed or hung anywhere in the classroom.

The Vocabulary Word Puzzle can be placed or hung anywhere in the classroom.
A fresh copy of any activity form that the students write on would be  needed for each class period.
